Arts PhD student wins 2018 Jon Prosser Award

THE Faculty of Arts would like to congratulate Paola Tine, an International PhD student in Social Anthropology at the University of Adelaide for winning the 2018 Jon Prosser Award for Outstanding Work by Beginning Scholars in Visual Methodologies.

Originally from Italy, where she completed her Bachelor degree and Master of Arts in Social and Visual Anthropology, Paola was given the opportunity of studying as a PhD scholar at the University of Adelaide, thanks to a generous scholarship.

"It is a dream come true and I am working hard to make the best out of this great experience. I am currently conducting an ethnographic-based research on food practices and family relations in modern Nepal," Paola said.

The innovative methodological approach of her PhD is to show some of the anthropological insights of her research through visual representation, especially paintings.

"In recent years, I have been writing academic papers on the use of art in anthropology and I have produced various paintings under the pseudonym of Polina Toll, which can be seen on my art page."

Because of Paola's artistic methodological approach, she was awarded the , which was established in 2015 by the International Visual Sociology Association (IVSA).

Paola said to receive the Jon Prosser Award was a real honour.

"In my future studies I am going to explore in further depth the potential of visual representation in social research, and to receive the acknowledgment of the IVSA gives me great confidence and renewed enthusiasm in pursuing this pathway."
