Meet the soloist: Elinor Warwick performs Beethoven's Romance No. 2 in F Major

Elinor Warwick

Currently in her honours year at the University of Adelaide, following her Bachelor of Music (Advanced), Elinor Warwick has developed as a performer and musician under the tutelage of Elizabeth Layton. She is also completing a Diploma of Languages in German Studies. Originally from Armidale in regional NSW, Elinor learnt violin from the age of 4 with teachers Errol Russell and Joanna Fairs-Wu. She currently has a violin studio in Adelaide, teaching students from age 5 to adult.

She considers one of her highlights being selected for and attending Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camps in 2018, 2022 and 2023. Elinor currently performs with the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, the Elder Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra, the New England Sinfonia and various other chamber ensembles. In the future she would like to pursue a career as an orchestral musician, with further advanced study on a range of styles in Europe.

We asked Elinor a few questions ahead of her performance in this Friday's Lunchtime Concert:

  • Where are you from originally?

I grew up in Armidale, a regional town on the Northern Tablelands of NSW. Although it has a population of only 22,000, it has a rich musical community which provided me with many opportunities, from when I began learning the violin at the age of 4.

  • How has your experience been studying at the Elder Conservatorium of Music?

Throughout my degree, I have learnt so much from my teacher, Elizabeth Layton. I have really enjoyed getting involved in many different ensembles at the Elder Conservatorium, including the Baroque Ensemble, various chamber groups, the Elder Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra, as well as Elder Con Symphony Orchestra. I’m excited to play both in the orchestra and as a soloist for this week’s performance.

  • What year are you in?

I am currently in my honours (and final) year of the Classical Performance degree, and I am also completing a Diploma of Languages in German Studies.

  • What is your future plan as a musician? Are you planning to go overseas?

I am hoping one day to play professionally in an orchestra, and I am currently exploring some options for overseas study within the next couple of years.

  • Is there anything special about your instrument?

I am very fortunate to have a loan from the Elder Conservatorium of a violin by Michael Bettcher in Nuremberg. I really enjoy the rich tone that this instrument creates, and so much so, that I am currently saving up to purchase my own instrument from the same workshop.

Join us in Elder Hall on Friday 25 August, 1:10pm, to hear Elinor perform with the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra. Bookings here.
