Discovery Lecture Series

Join conductor and music educator Graham Abbott as he opens up four of the wonderful programs on offer this year in the Elder Conservatorium’s Lunchtime Concert Series. Each one hour presentation will take place in Bishop Hall (in Elder Hall) from 11:00am.

Friday 3 April

A Quatre Mains: music by Dvořak and Stravinsky

As an introduction to Konstantin Shamray and Michael Ierace’s program of music for piano four hands, Graham looks at the role of the piano as an essential part of a cultured European home in the 19th century, and importance of piano transcriptions in disseminating music before the age of recordings.

Friday 15 May

Elder Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra: music by Handel, Torelli, Mendelssohn and Nielsen

Graham explores the two parallel types of concerto in the Baroque, both of which are represented in this program led by Dr Elizabeth Layton. The lecture also includes an insight into the amazing world of the gifted childhood prodigy, Felix Mendelssohn, and introduces Carl Nielsen, a Danish composer whose music is not often heard in Australia.

Friday 12 June

Dedication: music by Kreutzer and Beethoven

Andrew Haveron and Anna Goldsworthy perform one of the most monumental of all violin sonatas, which Beethoven dedicated to the great violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer. Kreutzer’s own music is far less well known, and in this lecture Graham explores the connection (and disconnection) between the two men.

Friday 21 August

Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra: music by Lauren McCormick and Shostakovich

Dr Luke Dollman leads the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra through Shostakovich’s mighty tenth symphony in this program. This provides Graham with the opportunity to discuss the life and work of this enigmatic composer, and to provide a listening guide to the symphony itself. We’ll also explore the world of an emerging composer today, as a background to hearing the premiere of a new work by Lauren McCormick.

Cost - $60 per session or $220 for all 4 sessions (entry to the lunchtime concert will be included).
