The Department of Asian Studies was established at the University of Adelaide in 1975 to develop a program of Chinese and Japanese studies. We now offer a full range of language and Asian Studies courses to students.
With its broad ranging social science courses and national award-winning language teachers, the Department of Asian Studies is committed to teaching languages in ways that include and integrate their cultural, social and historical contexts. Graduates not only learn the 'what' to say, but also why and how so that they can maximise the effectiveness of their communication and interactions with Asia.
The Department also contributes to the cultural dimensions of the Faculty and the University while its staff are proud of their contributions to the promotion of languages and Asian studies, locally, nationally and Internationally.
