The Royal Geographical Society of South Australia John Lewis Silver Medal

Whereas the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia Inc. has approved the establishment of the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia John Lewis Silver Medal to further encourage academic excellence in the field of Geography, the following rules are hereby made:

  1. There shall be a medal to be awarded annually and called "The Royal Geographical Society of South Australia John Lewis Silver Medal".
  2. The medal is to be awarded to the student who has made a significant theoretical or empirical contribution to Geography through the completion of a Masters degree by research or a Ph.D. in Geography at either Flinders University or University of Adelaide. Students eligible for consideration for the medal will be those whose examiners' reports are formally accepted within the calendar year.
  3. Whether a student's thesis is to be considered for the award of a medal shall be determined by the Head of the Discipline to which the thesis was submitted.
  4. Applications for the medal shall be sought by the President of the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia in December of each year and assessment will be conducted by a panel of three consisting of the President of the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia or nominee and the Professors of Geography or their nominees from the University of Adelaide and Flinders University.
    If, in the opinion of the panel, there is not a candidate of sufficient merit, the medal shall not be awarded for that year.
  5. These rules may be varied from time to time, but the title and purpose of the medal shall not be changed.
