Message from the Director
Welcome to the Elder Conservatorium of Music, the home of music education in South Australia. We are not only one of the most established musical institutions in this country, but one of the most forward-looking, as we seed the artists and teachers of the future.
Our dedicated and passionate staff teach across the disciplines of Classical Performance, Jazz, Popular Music, Composition, Sonic Arts, Musical Theatre, Music Education, Musicology, and at the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music. Alongside the opportunity to learn from Australia’s most celebrated musicians, we offer unrivalled ensemble experience, ranging from small ensembles to big bands and symphony orchestras; cutting-edge exposure to emerging technologies; performance opportunities in spectacular productions; close working relationships with the cultural institutions on our doorstep; and a bespoke model of care for our students, from our Open Academy Program through to our postgraduate courses.
We live in an era of enormous exponential change, in which the connectivity and humanity of music has never been more important. Come and join our community!
Exciting changes to the Bachelor of Music degrees from 2024
From January 2024, most of the undergraduate degrees at the Elder Conservatorium of Music will undergo some small but important changes. These changes will affect the structure of the Music degrees, not the content.
The degrees affected by these changes are: Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music (Advanced) and Bachelor of Music (Honours). The Bachelor of Music Theatre degree is not affected by these changes.
From the beginning of 2024, these degrees will offer four majors instead of the current eight majors:
- Classical Performance
- Jazz Performance
- Creative Practice
- Music Education

Internationally recognised opera singer, Teddy Tahu Rhodes has been appointed to the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music where he will play a leading role in its Classical Voice department as a teacher and mentor.
